Air Fryer Oil Spray Test: Aerosol Can vs. Spray Bottle — Which is Better?

Airfryer Oil Spray from a Can or Refillable Oil Sprayer?

Anyone who owns an air fryer knows the dilemma: too much oil makes the fries soggy, too little oil and nothing gets crispy. An oil spray solves this problem — but which option is right for you?

In this comparison, we take an honest look at pre-filled oil sprays from a can and refillable glass sprayers — with all their pros and cons.

What is the Difference?

Oil spray from a can contains pre-portioned, pure cooking oil in a pressurized can. Modern products like AÉRfryPRO® Airfryer Spray use BOV technology (Bag-on-Valve) — meaning: no propellants, no chemicals, just pure air pressure. The oil is in a separate bag and is sprayed evenly by compressed air.

Refillable oil sprayers are glass or stainless steel bottles with a pump mechanism. You fill your own oil and pump manually to create a spray mist.

Spray Quality and Uniformity

This is where the biggest difference in daily use becomes apparent. BOV can sprays deliver a consistent, fine mist with every spray — regardless of the angle. You can even spray upside down. The precision is approximately 1.6ml per typical application.

Refillable sprayers are more susceptible: the nozzle can clog, the spray head pumps unevenly after a few weeks, and with thicker oils (like olive oil at colder temperatures), it drips instead of spraying.

Hygiene and Shelf Life

A point many underestimate: Refillable sprayers are breeding grounds for germs if not cleaned regularly. Oil in an open bottle oxidizes, goes rancid, and loses its quality. Most users clean their sprayer far too infrequently.

BOV cans, on the other hand, are hermetically sealed. The oil never comes into contact with air until it is sprayed — hence the 2-year shelf life without loss of quality.

Cost per Application

At first glance, the refillable sprayer seems cheaper: buy once, refill repeatedly. But let's calculate precisely:

  • A good glass sprayer costs 10–20 Euros and lasts about 6–12 months with regular use
  • You need high-quality, heat-resistant oil for refilling (not every supermarket oil is suitable)
  • Due to uneven spraying, you often use more oil than necessary

A 200ml BOV can provides up to 800 fine sprays or about 120–200 applications. In a 3-pack bundle, the price is under 9 Euros per can — which amounts to a few cents per application.

Environment and Sustainability

Refillable sprayers score points for sustainability — less packaging waste over time. However, BOV cans are made of aluminum and are therefore 100% recyclable. And since they contain no propellants, they are significantly more environmentally friendly than conventional aerosol sprays.

Our Conclusion

Both options have their justification. If convenience, hygiene, and precision are important to you, a BOV can spray is the better choice — especially for the air fryer, where even distribution makes the difference between crispy and soggy.

If you want maximum flexibility and are willing to clean regularly, a high-quality glass sprayer is a good alternative.

Tip: For can sprays, make sure they operate without propellants (BOV technology) and without additives like lecithin or emulsifiers. For refillable sprayers, you should only use refined oil with a high smoke point.
